Fr Andrew Black
Fr Andrew Black knows what it means to change course. Raised in the Church of Ireland tradition, he became Catholic at the age of sixteen — a decision that reshaped his entire life. He went on to study at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome before being ordained for the Diocese of Down and Connor in 2015. Now serving in Belfast, Fr Andrew brings a rare perspective: someone who chose this faith from the outside, with open eyes and a searching heart. The Legion of Mary has always been a home for converts and seekers alike — a place where questions are welcomed and faith is lived out in practical, loving service. Fr Andrew’s story embodies the Legion’s conviction that the path to Christ can begin anywhere.
Northern Ireland is a place where religious identity runs deep — and where crossing from one tradition to another takes real courage. In this remarkable session, Fr Andrew Black shares his personal journey from the Church of Ireland to the Catholic faith, and reflects on what it means to follow a call that nobody else around you quite understands.
But this talk is not only about his story. It is about all of us. Whether you were cradle Catholic and drifted away, whether you married into the faith and never quite felt part of it, or whether you are simply curious about what the Church actually teaches — Fr Andrew speaks to the universal experience of searching for something true, and the unexpected places where we find it.
His message is simple and profound: conversion is not a one-time event. It is a lifelong journey, and every single one of us is on it. Whatever background you come from, there is room for you here.
I did not leave one home to find another — I discovered that the home I was looking for had been waiting for me all along.
